Roland Jarvis had an English father and French mother and spent his early years in France until the age of 13.

Roland started teaching life drawing and printmaking at Watford and Camberwell Schools of Art and found a top floor studio in Notting Hill Gate where he was able to paint. Thirty years ago he moved to a church hall in Hastings where created a distinctive  body of work, paintings, prints and sculpture. In his latter years he developed a form of unique animation videos created from sculptures made from typing machine parts and household items.

For eighteen years Roland spent the winters designing and building astronomical clocks. Roland also taught life drawing at Brighton Polytechnic for many years.
